Monika Herzig's Joni Mitchell Project

For their 3^rd presentation of 2023, The Charlottesville Jazz Society/WTJU Jazz Concert Series is excited to bring a Charlottesville favorite, pianist Monika Herzig, to town with a brand new group. Monika’s “Joni Mitchell Project” will play selections from her new recording with co-leader and vocalist Janiece Jaffe, called “Both Sides of Joni.” Following appearances by Allison Miller and Carmen Staaf, as well as Jane Bunnett and Maqueque, this special concert continues The Charlottesville Jazz Society’s commitment to bringing more attention to the important contributions of female jazz musicians. The Joni Mitchell Project will perform on Thursday April 20th at Unity of Charlottesville on Hydraulic Road at 7:30 pm.

Both Sides of Joni came about during a period of soul-searching by Janiece Jaffe during Covid, when she immersed herself in deeply meaningful recordings from her youth—especially those of Joni Mitchell. During the trying times of the pandemic, along with the Me-Too movement and George Floyd’s death, Janiece found truth and wisdom in the music that inspired her, and she wanted to share it with the world to inspire others. She then called her close friend Monika Herzig to collaborate on arrangements for jazz group of some of Joni’s classics, along with several deeper tracks.

Tragically, shortly after completing the recording, Janiece passed away during heart surgery. Taking her place on this tour is New York vocalist and recording artist Alexis Cole. The other band members are Peter Kienle – guitar, Isaac Beaumont – bass, and Josh Roberts – drums.
