Jenny Scheinman's All Species Parade
Wednesday, April 02, 2025
07:30 PM - 09:00 PM
Unity of Charlottesville
2528 Hydraulic Road, Charlottesville, VA, USA
On Wednesday April 2nd, The Charlottesville Jazz Society, WTJU and Unity of Charlottesville welcome violinist Jenny Scheinman back to town, with her new all-star band, All Species Parade.
Many of us fondly remember Jenny’s last appearance here with the group Parlour Game, which included, among others, bassist Tony Scherr, and the great pianist Carmen Staaf. For this nationwide tour, the band will again include Tony Scherr on bass and Carmen Staaf on piano, along with the amazing drummer Kenny Wolleson and guitarist Keith Ganz, who last appeared here with his wife, vocalist Kate McGarry. Along with Carmen and Kenny, the new album All Species Parade includes A-list guitarists Bill Frisell, Julian Lage and Nels Cline.
Jenny’s compositions were inspired by the extraordinary biodiversity of that part of the Pacific Northwest known as The Lost Coast, where she lives. Jenny says the music strives to capture the “charged relationship to nature, a feeling of being part of something bigger than ourselves.” Her playing is described as “radiant, soulful, with elements of both the jazz vernacular and old-time fiddling tradition.”
In addition to her extensive work in jazz and improvised music with Jason Moran, Brian Blade, and Allison Miller and many more, Jenny Scheinman has toured and recorded with songwriting legends such as Lucinda Williams, Bruce Cockburn, Robbie Fulks, Rodney Crowell, Lou Reed, Ani DiFranco and Joni Mitchell. This exhaustive tour in support of All Species Parade will also include stops in Chicago at The Green Mill, at The Savannah Music Festival, The National Gallery of Art, and many other prestigious venues. In between stops with her band, Jenny will perform with Bill Frisell’s new project, “In My Dreams.”
