JAZZ DOUBLE-HEADER AT THE FRONT PORCH NOVEMBER 12TH

Sunday, November 12, 2023

05:00 PM - 08:30 PM

The Front Porch

221 E Water St, Charlottesville, VA, USA

For the final show of 2023, on Sunday evening November 12th, beginning at 5:00 pm, The Charlottesville Jazz Society and WTJU announce an exciting jazz double bill at The Front Porch. At 5:00 pm, European band Moving Voices Trio will perform, followed at 6:30 by Michael McNeill’s Allegories quartet from Baltimore and New York.

The Moving Voices Trio is an all-star group led by Isreali/American pianist and composer Alon Nechushtan, with the superb rhythm section of the Moutin brothers from France.

Downbeat Magazine says Alon Nechushtan is “A talent to watch, with a surfeit of ideas, an unbridled spirit and bold, two-fisted sense of Architecture." Alon’s music adventures have brought him to such far corners of the world as the Yokohama Festival Japan, The Sao-Paolo Brazil Jewish Music Festival with his Quintet Talat, and Manila with his concerto for the Philippine Symphony.

Bassist Francois Moutin was born in Paris. Francois has worked with the greatest musicians of this age: Peter Erskine, Randy Brecker, Dave Liebman, John Abercrombie, Toots Thielemans, and others. François has performed in every important European Jazz Festival, and he has toured in over 30 countries around the world.

Francois’ twin brother, drummer Louis Moutin, was also born in Paris. Louis developed an early passion for music, particularly Jazz, in which he became immersed thanks to the family’s record collection. He and Francois perform both together and separately with a who’s who of great modern jazz artists, and they were a part of pianist Jean Michel Pilc’s popular trio for many years. They co-lead the Moutin Reunion Band.

Pianist Michael McNeill has cultivated a personal style that is at home in both mainstream jazz and chamber music. McNeill’s quartet Allegories employs a wide palate of instrumental sounds to capture the nuances of his adventurous compositions. Susan Alcorn is a rising star on the pedal steel guitar, not often heard in a jazz context. Trumpeter Dave Ballou has appeared on countless recordings over his long career. Shelly Purdy is a contemporary percussionist and educator committed to new and experimental music. She currently lives and teaches in Baltimore.

Tickets to see both Moving Voices and Allegories at The Front Porch, 211 E. Water Street, are available online at CJS.ticketbud.com. The combined general admission ticket price is $28, $25 for paid supporters of the CJS.. For more information, please call 434-249-6191.
